Lack of basic amenities, dust pollution, encroachment by pavement vendors, and lack of adequate bus bays have been haunting the commuters in Lalgudi bus stand for long.
The bus stand also has to bear the brunt of the smoke and dust kicked up from the bridge construction site located a stone’s throw distance form it. Encroachments by pavement vendors at the entrance and exit of the bus stand have been adds to the nuisance. A number of pavement merchants selling fruits, coconuts, beetle leaves, flowers and snacks can be seen vying with each other in encroaching the available space.
The bus stand does not have drinking water facility and passengers are put to great hardship, said M.Puyalavan, a merchant in the area. Although an overhead tank was constructed, it is located at a distance from the spot. Further, the tank was not being cleaned regularly, resulting in worm infestation, he said.
Arul, another trader, pointed out that traffic snarls compound the problem, particularly, when heavy cement factory trucks and tractors laden with sugarcane pass through the Lalgudi-Tiruchi highway.
